For those of you living in the north and NW Twin Cities metro area, the Northstar Commuter Rail is coming!

Just recently (12/11/2007), the final funding was approved to begin work on this new mass transit system. The plan is for the Northstar to use existing rail track-it will operate as more of a full-scale train and will be operated by the railway companies currently operating trains on the corresponding tracks and is scheduled for COMPLETION LATE 2009.

The corridor will be a 40 mile stretch of track from Big Lake thru Elk River, Coon Rapids, Fridley and connecting with the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit (LRT) line at the Mpls 5th Street and 3rd Avenue North station.

Time from Big Lake to Downtown is a blistering fast 41 minutes! Cost is predicted to be around $6 each way -- less than the cost of parking!
